Bitwig Studio mono phase: stereo width, Note FX, device chain mono fold vs spectral phase repair
Bitwig headphones and nested device chains can hide cancel. Master mono fold, polarity invert, small delay align, and honest stereo width / Note FX come first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds. Distinct DAW niche (not folk-instrument pages). Cross-links: polarity, vs time-align, null-test, when-not.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for polarity invert, Utility mono, or delay align. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.
What Bitwig Studio mono-phase failure sounds like
- Stereo Width or Tool Width collapses on Master fold. A Group or FX Layer looks huge in studio monitors, then mono fold eats Mid body.
- Note FX and layered Instrument Layers. Note FX chains and stacked instruments feel wide in headphones; phone speakers cancel kick or bass Mid.
- Nested device chains vs a simple mono check. Container / Chain / FX Layer nesting can hide Side-only energy until you fold the Master.
- Parallel FX Layers that never get folded. Dry + parallel Grid or FX Layer cancel when you finally check mono.
- Fine in Bitwig headphones, broken on export or livestream. Same destinations as YouTube / social mono and null-test workflow.
Fast Bitwig mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Drop a mono fold on Master (Tool Width 0%, Utility-style mono, or a dedicated monitor chain). Toggle it; do not leave it on.
- A/B critical Groups, FX Layers, and Returns with mono engaged. Note what disappears: kick body, bass Mid, vocal chest, stereo reverb bloom.
- Solo pairs that share energy: kick vs bass Layer, vocal vs stereo return, Instrument Layer stacks.
- Optional: watch a correlation meter on Master, then with mono off so you hear stereo again.
Order of operations in Bitwig Studio (before spectral phase rotation)
1. Polarity on one path
On one path of a dual DI+mic, dual-cab, or parallel FX Layer, flip polarity when body returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase.
2. Small delay align (not Haas width)
Use track Delay or a simple delay device in milliseconds/samples to align secondary paths to the hero. Do not use short L/R Haas delays as "width" before a mono check. Cousin: vs time-align.
3. Stereo Width honesty
Width tools collapse Side energy when you fold. That is a fold tool or image tool, not a repair. If Width 0% / mono kills the part, fix polarity and routing first. Do not "rescue" with more wideners.
4. Note FX and Instrument Layers
Note FX and layered instruments can create stereo energy that never survives phone fold. Solo each Layer under Master mono. Prefer mono-safe lows on critical layers.
5. Device chain mono fold vs spectral repair
Nested Chains and Containers change how stereo devices sum. Fold the Master (and the Container if needed) before blaming "Bitwig phase." Device-chain mono fold is a check, not frequency-aware repair. PHIXER is for residual band-by-band L/R fights on material that must stay stereo after those steps.
6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a stereo clip or Group must stay stereo and mono still hollows a band after polarity, delay, width honesty, and Note FX hygiene, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with Master mono A/B, plugin bypassed vs engaged.
Bitwig path types and typical failure modes
| Path | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Tool / Stereo Width on Group | Huge in cans, thin on phone | Bypass widener; center lows; Master mono proof |
| Note FX / Instrument Layer stack | Layers cancel Mid on fold | Polarity; simplify layers; mono-safe lows |
| Nested Chain / Container | Hidden Side-only energy | Fold Master + Container; simplify nesting |
| Parallel FX Layer | Dry + parallel cancel body | Polarity; align; simplify parallel |
| Export / livestream fold | Fine in Bitwig, hollow on phone | YouTube mono / Master mono habit |
Bitwig checklist (to export or stream)
1. Keep a Master mono toggle
Make Width 0% / mono fold muscle memory before bounce or livestream. Do not trust Bitwig headphones alone.
2. Audit Note FX and Layers with mono engaged
Bypass Note FX and solo each Instrument Layer under Master mono. Note which layer eats Mid.
3. Bypass wideners during the check
Prove the bed without stereo width devices. If mono is fine without them and broken with them, the widener is the problem.
4. Re-check after Chain or Container rebuilds
New nested devices change polarity and latency. Flip polarity again after you rebuild Chains or freeze/flatten.
When PHIXER helps in Bitwig Studio
- The material is already stereo and must stay stereo (stereo sample, stereo Group print, stereo return bed).
- Polarity, delay align, Width honesty, Note FX, and device-chain hygiene are cleaned up, but mono still hollows a band.
- You can A/B Master mono with PHIXER bypassed and hear clearer body or Mid without wrecking the image.
- You are not using it to replace polarity, delay align, or to "fix" Haas / stereo width tricks.
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Body thins when Master mono engages | Polarity; quieter stereo Sends | Fold reveals Side-only energy |
| Note FX / Layer stack fights dry | Polarity; simplify layers | Dual-path / stack arrival fight |
| Widener huge in cans, thin on phone | Bypass widener; center lows | Width ≠ phase repair |
| Stereo bed still cancels by band | PHIXER on that stereo bed | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Mono sample alone is dull | Tone / EQ / gain / sample choice | Not an L/R repair job |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not Master-mono auditioned yet.
- The fix is obviously polarity, delay, quieter Sends, simpler Note FX, or bypassing a widener.
- You want PHIXER to make the project wider or "more Bitwig." Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is balance or EQ.
- See also when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: Master mono → polarity on dual paths → delay-align secondary (not Haas) → honest stereo width → Note FX / Layer hygiene → device-chain fold proof → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation → fold again before export or stream.
